CreativeSpaces-Fredericton (CSF) is an incorporated nonprofit engaged in creative placemaking: an approach to urban planning that introduces arts and culture into new and existing community spaces to create lively hubs of artistic and cultural activity.
Inspired by the creative placemaking initiatives of Artscape Toronto, CSF was formed in response to one of Fredericton’s enduring cultural issues: the lack of sufficient and affordable spaces for members of its creative community to conduct their art practice, which is the same issue that Toronto had before Artscape came along.
Having sufficient workspaces, however, is what contributes to our artists being viable contributors to the city’s creative economy. By providing these spaces, creative placemaking benefits artists, city residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
OUR MISSION
Working with government, property managers, and businesses to open doors to affordable, accessible, creative spaces in the community of Fredericton.
OUR VISION
A Fredericton where artists have the spaces they need to create, teach, rehearse, exhibit, and sell their work.
We believe artists are essential to the life of any city. By supporting them with space to create, gather, and grow, we help build a more vibrant and inclusive Fredericton for everyone.
OUR OBJECTIVES
-
By presenting methods used in other Canadian cities to grow the number of their artist studios and creative hubs, CSF will advocate for similar approaches being used in Fredericton.
-
We will connect public and private property managers who are willing to offer affordable spaces with Fredericton’s artists who are seeking to lease these spaces.
-
We will list studio spaces as they become available from participating public and private property managers.
-
We will help others learn about creative placemaking, including the value of the city catalyzing public-private partnerships to grow the number of artist live/work spaces in Fredericton.
-
We will showcase the work of emerging Fredericton artists in unique city locations.
-
We will offer strategic planning services in the form of needs assessments, feasibility studies, and business plans to city arts organizations, the private sector, and government agencies to assist them in developing new spaces for creativity in Fredericton.
